Live sports production is the process of capturing a match with cameras, mixing those feeds together with replays, graphics and commentary in a gallery or outside-broadcast truck, and delivering the finished broadcast to viewers in real time. It is one of the most demanding disciplines in television because everything happens once, live, with no second take — and increasingly, parts of it are being automated to keep it affordable.
The core roles and kit

Production at different scales
A Champions League final and a third-tier league match are the same discipline at wildly different budgets. One team can cover several matches in a day without travelling, which transforms the economics of covering fixtures that could never justify a full outside broadcast. The director's role
At the centre of live production is the director, calling the show in real time — choosing which camera to cut to, when to roll a replay, how to pace the coverage against the run of play. It is a blend of technical command and editorial instinct, made under relentless time pressure. No automation replaces this role, because it is pure judgement exercised live; what automation does is take the repetitive tasks off the surrounding team so the director's decisions are better supported and faster to execute.
Why live production is unforgiving
Everything in live production happens once. A missed replay, a late graphic, an audio drop — there is no second take, and millions may be watching. That single constraint explains why the discipline is so demanding and so expensive: every system must be reliable in real time, every role rehearsed, every handover instant.
